In 2010 verbleef Folkeringa in een gastatelier van Instituto Buena Bista, het door Thirzo Martha, David Bade en Nancy Hoffman opgerichte instituut voor hedendaagse kunst op Cura\u00e7ao. Daar raakte ze gefascineerd door het fenomeen \u2018bling bling\u2019. Wat in het westen door velen als wansmaak wordt gezien, geldt op Cura\u00e7ao voor velen als statussymbool. In Nederland zette ze het onderzoek naar de visuele kant van identiteit voort. Zegelringen, ambtsketens, Indiase bangle-armbanden, vitrines met dure schakelhorloges en goedkope sieraden van nepgoud op de markt vormen inspiratiebronnen voor Folkeringa\u2019s huidige werk.<\/span><\/p>

Resultaat is een showroom vol bling bling. De meeste werken refereren op losse wijze aan een autologo, schakelarmbanden en horlogebanden, maar Folkeringa gebruikt de losse delen ook als abstracte elementen, die niet meer specifiek aan bestaande bling bling doen denken, maar een eigen beeldentaal vormen. In 2010, Folkeringa stayed in a guest studio at Instituto Buena Bista, the contemporary art institute on Cura\u00e7ao founded by Tirzo Martha, David Bade, and Nancy Hoffman. There, she became fascinated by the phenomenon of \u201cbling bling.\u201d What many in the West see as bad taste is considered a status symbol by many in Cura\u00e7ao. In the Netherlands, she continued her research into the visual aspect of identity. Signet rings, chains of office, Indian bangle bracelets, display cases filled with expensive link watches, and cheap imitation-gold jewellery found at markets all serve as sources of inspiration for Folkeringa\u2019s current work.<\/p>

The result is a showroom full of bling bling. Most works loosely reference car logos, link bracelets, and watch straps, but Folkeringa also uses the individual components as abstract elements that no longer specifically evoke existing bling bling, instead forming their own visual language.
