Special Guest at Museum Jan Cunen 2012

 

Na mijn verblijf op Curaçao (als een artist in residence bij Instituto Buena Bista), werd ik gevraagd om een werk te maken voor de tentoonstelling Beeld Hal Werk (over de stand van de beeldhouwkunst in Nederland, Amsterdam, 2010), georganiseerd en gecureerd door Sohrab Bayat, Ad de Jong, Manuel Klappe en Wouter Klein Velderman.

 

Ik werd nadrukkelijk gevraagd om werk te maken dat zich zou onderscheiden. Dit heb ik letterlijk genomen en maakte een onderscheidingsteken. Na mijn mensfiguren is dit het eerste werk waarbij mijn focus verschuift van non-verbale communicatie die innerlijke ervaringen weerspiegelt, naar non-verbale communicatie die sociale status en culturele codes verkent. Op Curaçao zag ik veel bling, iets wat ik niet gewend was in mijn Nederlandse omgeving. Dit deed me beseffen dat statussymbolen sterk cultureel bepaald zijn en in verschillende contexten een andere betekenis dragen.

 

Zaaltekst bij tentoonstelling Museum Jan Cunen, Oss (2012): ...Dat geldt ook voor het pompeuze object dat in de centrale hal hangt. Bedekt met gouden ketting en swarowski kristallen lijkt het te willen imponeren. Maar de weerbarstigheid en imperfecties van het gietpurschuim zijn zichtbaar aanwezig en vertonen een blik achter de maskerade....

After my stay on Curaçao (as an artist in residence at Instituto Buena Bista), I was invited to create a work for the exhibition Beeld Hal Werk (about the state of sculpture in the Netherlands, Amsterdam, 2010), organized and curated by Sohrab Bayat, Ad de Jong, Manuel Klappe, and Wouter Klein Velderman.

 

I was explicitly asked to create work that would stand out; I took this literally and made a distinguishing emblem. After my human figures, this is the first work where my focus shifts from non-verbal communication that reflects inner experiences to non-verbal communication that explores social status and cultural codes. On Curaçao, I saw a lot of bling, something I was not accustomed to in my Dutch environment. This made me realize that status symbols are heavily culturally determined and carry different meanings in different contexts.

“…The same goes for the pompous object hanging in the central hall. Covered in a gold chain and Swarovski crystals, it seems eager to impress. Yet the stubbornness and imperfections of the cast polyurethane foam remain visibly present, revealing a glimpse behind the masquerade…”
